- Power Supply Interruptions: Many “dead” gates are simply disconnected. We often find tripped circuit breakers, blown fuses, or tripped GFCI outlets. For systems with a battery backup, a dead or failing battery (typically reading below 12V) can mimic a major electrical fault.
- Sensor Misalignment and Obstructions: Photoelectric sensors are the most frequent cause of gates that reverse before closing or refuse to close at all. In Central Texas, dust, spider webs, and debris can fog the lenses. Cleaning the lenses with a soft cloth and ensuring the sender and receiver are properly aligned often resolves the issue.
- Lack of Lubrication: Sluggish movement or grinding noises are usually caused by dry hinges, rollers, chains, or tracks. We recommend applying lithium grease or silicone lubricant every three to six months, especially in dusty conditions, to prevent the motor from overheating or straining.
- Control and Signal Issues: A surprising number of unresponsive gates are fixed simply by replacing a dead remote battery or verifying that the receiver antenna is upright and unobstructed.
- Mechanical Obstructions: For sliding gates, stones or compacted dirt in the track can cause the system to stop mid-travel. Using the manual release to push the gate by hand is the easiest way to identify if the problem is a physical bind or an electrical failure.
